Christopher Schmaltz, 2009 Chair

Christopher Schmaltz is a member of the law firm of Gust Rosenfeld P.L.C., an Arizona firm founded in 1921. He practices in the area of public law, representing cities, towns, school districts and other public entities. He advises them on a variety of matters, including land use and zoning, procurement, contracting, public finance, elections, aviation, and other general public law issues.

Chris has been actively involved in Valley Forward since 2000, serving on and chairing the Land Use and Open Space Committee, serving on the 2004 Report Card Committee, and currently chairing the 2008 Report Card Committee. He has had the pleasure to be involved in some of Valley Forward's outstanding projects in recent years, including Valley Forward's efforts related to the Rio Salado project, the 2004 Report Card and Valley Forward's Pedestrian Freeway regional trails map, passport and website projects.

Chris moved with his family from northern Minnesota to Phoenix in 1986. After graduating from the University of Arizona in 1992, Chris attended law school at the American University Washington College of Law, in Washington, D.C. He studied and practiced in D.C. until 1998, when he, his wife Susan and their oldest daughter moved back to the Valley. Chris, Susan and their three daughters live in Phoenix.

Valley Forward was founded in 1969, one year before the first Earth Day.

Members of Valley Forward represent large corporations and small businesses, municipalities and government agencies, educators, non-profits and concerned individuals working together on environmental initiatives.

Throughout its history, Valley Forward has advocated for regional cooperation and connectivity.

Experts are declaring that the time for sustainability is now and more than ever before a driving opportunity for our financial solvency.  Valley Forward’s 2009 theme is Healthy Environment, Healthy Economy.
